The Operating System Boot Process
After installing Windows, it is important to fine-tune the system for optimal performance, security, and usability.
Whether you are setting up a brand-new PC or reinstalling Windows, these post-installation tips will help you get the most out of your system.
Keeping Windows updated ensures security patches and performance improvements.
Go to Settings > Windows Update
Click Check for updates
Install everything and restart if needed
Repeat until no more updates are available.
Even if Windows installs some drivers automatically, it is best to download the latest drivers from the hardware manufacturers :
Chipset (motherboard)
GPU (NVIDIA/AMD/Intel)
Audio & Network
Use tools like Intel DSA, AMD Adrenalin, or GeForce Experience
Windows sometimes comes with pre-installed apps you do not need.
Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps
Uninstall unnecessary programs (e.g., Candy Crush, Xbox apps if not used)
Alternatively, use third-party tools like :
Revo Uninstaller
CCleaner (free version)
Too many startup apps slow down boot time.
Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to
open Task Manager
Go to the Startup tab
Right-click and disable apps you don’t need at startup (e.g., Spotify, OneDrive)
For desktops or performance laptops :
Go to Control Panel > Power Options
Choose High Performance or Balanced
Avoid “Power Saver” mode unless on a laptop with low battery
This feature allows you to roll back your system in case of issues.
Search for "System Restore"
Select your system drive > Configure
Turn on system protection and set disk space usage (~5–10 GB)
Install the tools you’ll use regularly :
Browser: Chrome, Firefox, Edge
Office Suite: Microsoft Office, LibreOffice
Antivirus: Windows Security is good, or use Malwarebytes for added safety
Media Player: VLC
File Compression: 7-Zip, WinRAR
Tailor Windows to your liking :
Theme and Dark Mode: Settings > Personalization
Taskbar & Start Menu: Remove unwanted icons or apps
Privacy Settings: Limit telemetry and app tracking (Settings > Privacy & Security)
Use Windows Backup or third-party tools to create a full system image.
Tools include :
Macrium Reflect (Free)
EaseUS Todo Backup
Built-in File History or Backup and Restore
Once everything is set up, create a restore point so you can revert if problems occur.
Type "Create a restore point" in the Start menu
Select your C: drive and click Create
A fresh Windows installation is just the beginning. Optimizing your system ensures faster performance, better stability, and a smoother user experience.
Follow these post-installation steps to keep your PC in top shape from day one.
